Matisse x Pompidou

After the success of their Munch exhibition, the Pompidou Centre brings together sixty-odd works to show how Henri Matisse would work on the same motif or subject in a multitude of different ways. During his/her life, the style of an artist can obviously change, slowly or radically or both, whilst still using the same subject as source. Matisse was especially fond of revisiting his own work from a different direction, and this exhibition displays pairs of paintings or series (hence the the title) for us to better compare what has changed and how that affects our appreciation of the piece in question. (thanks)

Ross Ching x DTS

The Speaker Orchestra by Ross Ching, a promotion for DTS audio technologies (soundsystems) starts out kind of cheesy but quickly becomes a virtual hypnosis of paint. Very cool.

Holton Rower

Beyond. Holton Rower is an American artist who (clearly) juxtaposes sculpture and paint to create these colorful, psychedelic works of art. I'm happy and somehow sad that it was all captured on video - sometimes it's fun to imagine just how the piece was created. Then again, the video is trip-y and wonderful. Dope!

FIAC 2010 Part 3

J-M Basquiat

Ivan Navarro - this one was sweet because the neon letters were only half-letters that reflected off the different sections of the drum kit to become whole words.

Gun Gordillo

Liz Larner's "Lux Interior", 2010

John Miller

I'd also like to point out that there was some Antony Gormley (the guy who created the series of statues on the rooftops around Madison Square Park in NYC) as well as some Larry Clark (the guy who photographs teens and their sexuality).

ZSO x Sara Blake

Check out these incredible paintings by ZSO - and that's not all ! there are plenty more HERE. There's a very pleasant balance between the realism of the portraits and the effects created by the colors and imaginative add-ons such as paint drips and notes of neon lights. Very cool!

Nick Lepard

This is exactly the kind of brush stroke I like most. These thick yet identifiable blends of color were created by Vancouver-native Nick Lepard and certainly float my boat. They remind me of a café-bar I used to frequent in NYC called L'Orange Bleue - where giant paintings of both patrons and owners hung on the walls in homage of good times. Love!

Kanye West x Marco Brambilla

Kanye West POWER by Marco Brambilla (Director's Cut) from ARTJAIL

"Power is a neo-classical video tableau, a single continuous camera move from an extreme close up of Mr. West gradually revealing an epic composition showing characters and creatures surrounding him in an abstract environment – all moving in extreme slow motion. Inspired by Michelangelo’s frescos in the Sistine Chapel, the piece depicts a faux historical moment – an empire on the brink of collapse from its own excess, decadence and corruption.

The mostly-nude icons (including models Diandra Forrest, Jessica White, and Irina Shayk) reference imagery from almost every historical era, surrounding Kanye in an orgy of decadence and destruction. Mr. West’s place at the center of the universe seems to be in a precarious state in Brambilla’s video work.

In making Power, Mr. Brambilla has evolved the video collage technique he created for his epic 2009 video installation, Civilization (commissioned by hotelier AndrĂ© Balazs for The Standard, New York). The imagery for Power was shot specifically for the piece and has been layered to create compelling new narratives and stunning visual mosaics. With exquisite technical production and seamless editing, Brambilla’s multi-layered tableaux of interconnecting images and looped video blend into an expansive landscape that forms his hallmark style."

Via B-B

I just can't decide - is it simply too slow for my personal admiration of it or am I just too tainted by the non-conventionality to appreciate the nouveau style?

Anamorphic Typography

Joseph Egan and Hunter Thomson, students at the Chelsea School of Art and Design, created this series of incredible exhibit of anamorphic typography - type that is only wholly comprehensible from a single, very specific point of view. I've seen other examples before, but I really enjoy the particular textual ideas of this one, which are much more direct and in-your-face. Be sure to check the video below. Very cool!

Brandan Cass

Brendan Cass in his studio in New York from Lars Bohman Gallery - I love seeing artists in their own element: it feels like a sneak peak into their mindsets and is a great way to see the techniques with which their pieces are actually made.
