Subodh Gupta

I first heard about Subodh Gupta via the amazingness that is TED. He was mentioned in Ravin Agrawal's talk entitled "10 Young Indian Artists to Watch", and spoken quite highly of as he is described the "Alphamale of contemporary Indian art". He "celebrates local and mundane objects globally and on a grander and grander scale by incorporating that into ever more colossal sculptures and installations." His works caught my eye, to say the least. I immediately had to Google him and see the pictures in a larger format than my iTouch's small screen. I quite love what he does and how he creates such a grandiose metaphor out of such seemingly unimportant everyday items. The messages he portrays about the health of his people and of the world are sent out via these glimmering sculptures and paintings that seems to be representative of both hope and despair. Recyclable genious.

I want one

Sam Browne, minus left arm

General of the Armies, John J. Pershing in France, October 1918 wearing the Sam Browne belt.

I'm not sure where to find one or even where to look (minus ebay, but the ones I saw there were pretty expensive/authentic looking), but I want what I have come to find is called a "Sam Browne Belt" - named after a British army officer who served in India during the 19th century. He lost his left arm in battle and found that controlling or drawing his sword out from his belt without the use of his left hand was nearly impossible. So he invented the second strap that went across his shoulder in order to facilitate that movement. Now, to the more modern side of the story - the one that sounds less intellectual and more materialistic. I was on Gilt last night and saw this most amazing beautiful belt in the Vogue March Issue sale (which, incidentally is themed "military"), and I fell in love. I obviously Googled the hell out of "belt that goes over shoulder", "shoulder belt", "military shoulder belt", and "body belt" (this one gave me some fabulous neon light reflecting bicycle belts, by the way) and finally found the name Sam Browne. So, if you know where I can find one, or if you know what the Vogue one is called or who it's by, let me know! :)

Ponder this.

Found this on Gizmodo. Click on it and make it bigger. Yes, I'm a geek. Total geek. Über-geek. With an umlaut - a giant one apparently because apple+c in combination with the search for a regular capitalized umlauted (?) "u" doesn't work properly in Google.
But I thought this was an interesting visual interpretation of the magnitude of the interwebz so I wanted to share it with you. Aw, how nice am I? Ok, seriously speaking though, it's crazy - I could be in the New York Times! Well, not really, but sort of. Metaphorically, at least. And as the writers of Geekologie say, "I've mastered the magic of metaphors and I'm adding it to my wizard resumé."
