Festival of Color

"Every year the Hare Krishna Temple in Spanish Fork, Utah puts on the biggest Holi (festival of colors) celebration in the Western Hemisphere. In 2011 the Spanish Fork Police department estimated that over 40,000 people attended in the first day alone of the two-day festival. Organizers carefully rationed their stash of approximately 120,000 bags of colored powder.

Participants come from all over the country (and some from abroad), but the majority of attendees for the Festival of Colors are students from Brigham Young, Utah Valley, and Utah universities.

The Holi Festival of Colors celebrates the triumph of good over evil and ushers in the spring season. The festival commemorates a Hindu myth about a witch, Holika, who burned children in a fire. One child repeated the Hare Krishna mantra as he was carried into the flames and the witch was burned instead. At the Spanish Fork festival, rock and roll, R&B, and other modern interpretations of the mantra are played by musicians throughout the day and chanted in a call and response game between performers and attendees. The main event of each festival is the coordinated throwing of colored powder, when the sky above the crowd is filled with rainbow puffs of dye."

Color Me ________ by YES aka Andy J Miller and Andrew Neyer is a colorfully collaborative expo happening at the YES Gallery in Cincinnati wherein visitors can come color in the 24 foot mural with giant markers. Looks like loads of fun!

Holton Rower

Beyond. Holton Rower is an American artist who (clearly) juxtaposes sculpture and paint to create these colorful, psychedelic works of art. I'm happy and somehow sad that it was all captured on video - sometimes it's fun to imagine just how the piece was created. Then again, the video is trip-y and wonderful. Dope!

Megan Geckler installation by Wexner Center for the Arts - an interesting installation entitled "spread the ashes of the colors" which is being presented in Ohio. Tres colorful, tres cool! Great music by Arcade Fire.

Carnovsky RGB Exhibit

Sweet expo entitled "RGB" by Carnovsky, an italian duo consisting of Francesco Rugi and Silvia Quintanilla, at the Johanssen Gallery in Berlin. Different colored lights determine what is and isn't visible. Dope!

Dragon 76

Here's a short video by Junobo (yes, the paint supply store) for Dragon 76/Japan. He was born in Shiga, Japan, and currently lives in Yokohama. This video is a presentation of his artistic and creative style, which I admire most profoundly. Soft, delicate and precisely placed waves of color combined with thicker, underlying masses for a base create a wonderful palette of textures and depth. Wonderful!
