DIY KIINI BIKINI pt 1

UPDATE: GO TO PART 2 and PART 3!

As you may or may not have noticed over the past few seasons, the Kiini swimwear line is très à la mode.

It's bright and bold and sexy all at the same time. Also, it has a very handmade feel to it - probably because they are all actually handmade with beautiful crochet work, elastic and high tech swimming fabrics. Which is why this is the perfect DIY project. Albeit a bit difficult, but that's what amazing moms who know how to crochet are for, right? ;)

THE INSPIRATION :

THE DIY :

BOUGHT:
- 5 different color elastic bands (about 1cm thickness)
- 5 different color cotton crocheting thread
- 1 piece of stretchy swimwear-esque fabric (I used nylon)

STEP 1: BUY THE STUFF

STEP 2: Cut out the triangles and bikini bottom shape out of a bathing suit that fits:

STEP 3: Decide what colors will go where (crochet vs elastics):
Make sure to leave enough space for the first row of crocheting (1cm).

STEP 4: First tests with crochet (THANKS MOM!):

To be continued......

I absolutely love those kiini bikinis too, and wanted to turn these into my main diy project for this summer, so I was absolutely thrilled when I saw you had the same idea !
I think they are totally achievable with a bit training, and you appear to start that project very well !
Please do tell how it turned out, Id really want to know about your experience :)

  11. Hi guys!

Still working on it! It's actually REALLY hard to do! But I will post it the minute it's done!

The issue that I've been having is with the blue fabric bunching in the middle of the first red stitch - we can't get it to stay in place and I don't want there to be a floating piece of fabric there exposing skin, if that makes sense?

The colored elastic is from a fabric shop here in Paris called Marché Saint Pierre - I bought almost everything from there, quite cheap too. The bikini will come out to about 30-40€ I think (so much better than the original 250-300!)

Will get back soon (at least before summer) ;)

    1. I was going to buy this until I saw that it would be nearly 2 months before it would be at my door! So I too am also attempting a DIY of it as well. Anyway, have you considered stabilizing the bikini edges with interfacing or embroidery stabilizer before folding it over? It looks like she used embroidery floss on the edges instead of crochet yarn. It looks flat.

Could you tell me what are the crochet stitches your mother has used so far on the elastic?
